“Bayreuth’s industrial prosperity is particularly based on colonial value creation – without sugar cane, cotton or cocoa, the local industrialisation would have been completely different. But instead of following the traces of these raw materials and critically examining the circumstances of their production, racist and colonial language and images continue to operate in public space. Through this simultaneous fading out and devaluation of Black people, the colonial legacy of the city remains powerful to this day. Together we will go in search of the traces of colonial Bayreuth.”
